Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea... Police Chief Delaney Reed is good at keeping secrets for the beach town of Ordinary Oregon–just ask the vacationing gods or supernatural creatures who live there. But with the first annual Cake and Skate fundraiser coming up, the only secret Delaney really wants to know is how to stop the unseasonable rain storms. When all the god powers are stolen, a vampire is murdered, and her childhood crush turns out to be keeping deadly secrets of his own, rainy days are the least of her worries. Hunting a murderer, outsmarting a know-it-all god, and uncovering an ancient vampire’s terrifying past isn’t how she planned to spend her summer. But then again, neither is falling back in love with the one man she should never trust.

Delaney is just as frustratingly clueless about her personal safety as she's always been. Somehow you'd think that a police chief--who just got shot a few months back because she wasn't paying attention--would have figured out that maybe it would be a good idea to lock her door and listen when people tell her she's in danger and needs to be especially careful. Not Delaney. She decides to keep leaving her door unlocked and then go running on the beach with no weapon instead. Sensible girl. Really. That's one issue I have with Delaney, while another is the fact that she hasn't bothered to read up on her other job, being the god's bridge. She's left all her family journals about the gods and the Reed family's experiences with them and all the various creatures to Jean. How does Jean's studying the journals do anything to help Delaney get more competent and better educated in her position? It's like Delaney thinks that she, Jean and Myra are some triumvirate that can magically share the position, when in fact the other two can't do her job because they aren't firstborns. They won't always be around when Delaney needs to know whatever the journals hold and she's got to stop thinking she's anything less than fully responsible. I'm not sure I even like Delaney at this point because she's still so stupidly irresponsible and other people are paying the price for it.

On to the rest of the book. The plot is interesting but is not resolved within the volume and that bothers me. Clearly the war between the gods, their allies and subjects that was referred to in the last book, wasn't going to be over and done in this one, but I would have thought Monk would at least resolve the mystery by figuring out who murdered Sven and then confronting the murderer/s. Instead the book stops three days before the meeting is planned to occur. It's awkward and leaves the book feely oddly unfinished. The story just kind of stops, and if Monk was trying to substitute Delaney's and Ryder's coming to a decision about their relationship, in place of the murder's resolution, well it just doesn't work out. The reader is not going to fail to notice that no one has killed or captured the person who killed Sven, so the book shouldn't be done. Yet it has run out of words, apparently. Bothers me. Sloppy plotting. Still, I like the idea of the town, and the characters Mr. Rossi, Granny Wolfe and many of the gods on vacation are interesting, so we'll see what happens in the next book.

Devils and Details Ordinary Magic Volume 2 Devon Monk 9781939853042 Books Reviews

This is the second in the Ordinary Magic series, and it was just as fantastic as the first one. This time Police Chief of Ordinary, Oregon, Delaney Reed is faced with the murder of a vampire. This is pretty alarming, since it takes a lot to take down a vampire. And she then finds out that all the vacationing god’s powers have been stolen, her long time crush Ryder is keeping secrets that could be very important, and Thor seems to be trying to drown them all with non-stop rain. As she investigates the murder, she uncovers more of the prime vampire,Old Rossi’s past, and begins to see him and some of the other creatures in town in a whole new lights. I really like all of the different characters, and it was nice to learn a bit more about Ryder Bailey, the man Delaney has loved for so long. Some mysteries are answered, but there are more to be solved, which we’ll have to wait to find out about in the next story. I hate the suspense, but I’m sure the next tale will be worth the wait.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first of this series involving vacationing mythological deities in a small northwestern town creating mayhem and humor and the family that is magically destined to support them and control them. The problem I seem to have is with the main character, Delaney, the sheriff in town, who is hopelessly in love with her "ever since I can remember" crush Ryder Bailey. There are such weird blind spots. Delaney, the sheriff, leaves her door unlocked and then is surprised when people just come on in. She doesn't notice that her newest employee, Ryder, acts like an experienced police officer. And I don't get where this devotion to Ryder comes from. He is in town for his own reasons, he lies to her, he ignores her advice on things he knows little about. Why is this guy such a catch? I like the 'verse, I like the writing and most of the characters, I just do not get the "romantic relationship" between these two primary characters so.....
Disappointed again. I so wanted this author to improve. The town and its characters are funny and entertaining. The writing is fine and there aren't a ton of grammatical errors. I love the sister-cops story line. Unfortunately they are terrible cops. They miss obvious clues that the author has carefully laid out like bread crumbs for the reader, which THIS reader finds very annoying. The heroine goes alone to interrogate a murder suspect, with whom she is probably in love, and makes out with him. UGH. Not strong, smart or professional. If all that had stayed in her inner monologue I could have respected her. From book one it has been made clear that this guy has law enforcement experience, and yet the sisters don't see it until the end of book two. A video tape of a murder isn't discovered until the second time the sisters check out the murder site. then there's "Where did I see that ring before?" Um. I know. How come I know and the narrator doesn't? They are such bad cops. Why would the people in town respect them? The heroine always talks about "breaking up" fights between creatures but I don't see how. She's not strong, smart, or powerful. Why would they respect her? I'm curious as to how this story will develop but I'm not going to read the next book. The plot and character fails are too annoying.
