She called herself Denny Lyons ... and she was everything men dreamed of on long, lonely nights ...She had it all, from the white-gold hair that framed her expensive face to the graceful, slender ankles - and all those pleasant extras in-between ...She had everything - including big ideas. She was headed straight for the top and she thought she knew just how to get there ...But she had made one mistake - and someone thought that was one too many...

A Real Gone Guy (Audible Audio Edition) Frank Kane Robertson Dean Audible Studios Books

Frank Kane was one of the great writers of the great pulp era. He penned dozens of novels and hundreds of short stories for many of the well known mags such as Manhunt. Kane also wrote scripts for the Mike Hammer tv show. He is not to be confused with Henry Kane, another pulp writer. His original novels had great covers and unfortunately the most recent reprints from Prologue do not feature such. A Real Gone Guy is one of Kane's Johnny Lidell stories. Lidell was his tough-nosed private detective who worked out of midtown New York City. Lidell was not necessarily a cerebral PI. He liked to convince people to do the right thing with his fists as often as not. The Lidell novels written by Kane are all easy to read and before you know it you are too deep in the story to put it down. This book is no exception to this rule.

In A Real Gone Guy, Lidell is hired by a client he never meets. He doesn't even know her name. She calls him and offers him five hundred clams to solve a murder. Well, she is the only one who thinks its a murder. The police are convinced that they were called to a hotel room by an anonymous tip to catch a thief and killer and, once the bullets started flying, they got their guy. Unfortunately, by the time they nailed this guy, he had already gunned down one of their own. Needless to say, they are not too eager to reopen the investigation and Lidell's efforts to do so don't meet with much success.

Lidell is later called to a nightclub singer's apartment because she has information for him. He is knocked out the minute he goes inside and, when he awakens, she's dead and booze have been poured on Lidell to make it look like he did her. Lidell is on the run and has to solve this before he takes the fall for all the murders.

Its a good oldfashioned hard edged pulp PI novel and was great fun to read. I recommend all the Johnny Lidell books I have read so far. Not a bad one in the bunch.
